Most passengers are not aware that the air they breathe aboard an aircraft comes straight out of the engines and that this air can be toxic. Despite overwhelming evidence that toxic chemical compounds within the high performance jet oils may leak at any time into the air conditioning system providing the breathing air for the aircraft cabin the industry still denies that these compounds pose a threat to flight safety and to the health of the occupants.
The film by aviation journalist Tim van Beveren gives evidence to the contrary. For more than 7 years he has researched this particular dark side of aviation and one of its best kept “dirty little secrets”. He has met and interviewed many affected flight crew members and passengers who became witnesses and victims of what the industry has named a “fume event”. Such events have changed their lives significantly. They all suffer a disease that – so far – officially is denied to exist but which has already been established more than 15 years ago: Aerotoxic Syndrome.
It has been well accepted by an increasing number of scientists and medical personal that the heated toxic compounds from engine oils of which some belong to the same chemical family as the war agent Sarin may cause severe neurological effects among humans, if they are exposed. But so far the industry and regulators, as well as the responsible politicians, have done nothing to correct this problem that emerged already in the late 1950ies when aircraft engineers decided to switch from the previous ram air system to a bleed air system, allowing byproducts of engine lubricants to enter into the airstream for the aircraft cabin. Until today no filters and not even sensors measuring the air quality aboard an aircraft are required. The only exception is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which is at this time the only aircraft again equipped with an electrical ram air system that avoids cabin air contamination by design.
